You’d actually be surprised. It’s personified by the person who greets you every time you walk into a doctor’s office, the assistant. That’s right, kids. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states medical “assisting” (as they call it) is one of the fastest growing professions in the country. While the receptionist can get by with a warm smile and good organizational skills, a degree from on campus or accredited online universities is what’s needed to advance.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, as of 2008, there were nearly 500,000 medical assistants in the work force. It also projects an extra 160,000 will be needed by 2018. The Bureau projects the usual growth rate for all jobs over that time period to be 11-12% over the same time period, however, the field of medical assistants is looking at a 34% growth in a period of ten years.

Still, entering the profession means having more than a clean, professional appearance and a courteous demeanor. This still primarily female livelihood requires solid clerical, secretarial and communications capability. While comprehending health care techniques is not required when starting out, you will learn them, if only from being immersed in the environment. As such, one can develop a plan for a true health care career well beyond making sure which patient sees the doctor in whatever order. Currently, the Bureau divides medical assistants into three classes:

(1) Administrative Medical Assistants – They update and file patients’ medical records, fill out insurance forms, and arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services. They also perform tasks such as telephones, greet patients, handle correspondence, schedule appointments and some billing and bookkeeping. Administrative medical assistants usually use this position as their gateway to the next two positions.

(2) Clinical Medical Assistants – They have more duties, depending on state law. Common tasks include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures, preparing and assisting during exams. They also collect and prepare specimens and perform basic tests, and dispose of and/or sterilize medical instruments. It’s also not uncommon for them to instruct patients, administer medications, telephone prescriptions, draw blood, and much, much more – all the while keeping the examination rooms neat and clean.

(3) Specialized Medical Assistants – Their tasks revolve around their practice’s specialization. More exact titles are, for instance, ophthalmic, optometric (both eye) or podiatric (feet). To illustrate, podiatric medical assistants make castings of feet, expose and develop x rays, and assist podiatrists in surgery.

Entry into the profession is pretty straightforward. A kid out of high school could land an administrative position, but going to a secretarial school the year certainly helps. She can advance herself by enrolling in an online college, taking courses during off hours, and thus advancing up the ladder. A two year degree should lead into the specialty arena. If one wants to grow into nursing, this is also an excellent way to start.

In regards to salary, a student with no experience usually starts at $19,000 to $23,000. The average salary is approximately $25,000 and at the upper is around $30,000. There are health benefits. Yes, the salary is low, so look at that as further incentive to eventually get from behind the desk and into more demanding work. There’s no better vantage point than from the other side of those glass panels through distance learning course.

Online programs allow you to continue working as you advance your career. Perhaps the highest assistant on the tier will be your ideal niche, however, you may find yourself encouraged to go for a medical college degree and really get into the health care field.

Going To College Online Is A Wise Choice These Days! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/going-to-college-online-is-a-wise-choice-these-days/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/going-to-college-online-is-a-wise-choice-these-days/#comments Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:44:31 +0000 Michelle Conner http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/going-to-college-online-is-a-wise-choice-these-days/ It seems more and more people are going online. Whether they are signing up with Facebook or posting their band’s latest video on MySpace, the online world has become so dense it’s no longer being called “the Web” and the newest jargon is calling it “the cloud”. A report just released by the Sloan Consortium now says education is going the same way, which makes the convenience of online schools a favorite for all students.

According to their study, enrollment in virtual schooling was up 17% compared to 1.2% for their brick-and-mortar counterparts. Of the 18.2 million college students in the U.S. today, 4.6 million were now taking their courses online. Also, approximately 82% of the online students were undergraduates. If that isn’t enough, online colleges themselves reported nearly a 75% increase in their course offerings. Not only have that, but 66% of these schools reported student interest in creating new classes to fulfill their client’s needs. If you need more information about life experience degree, look on the internet.

The report noted a key reason for e-learning’s growth is the economy. The students realize one of the few ways they can improve their income is to upgrade their degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes a worker with a Bachelor’s earns $52,000 annually while the average secondary grad only gets $30,000. The four-year grad is also more likely to get benefits like health care and 401(k) plans. So earning a four year degree makes financial sense.

If that isn’t enough, getting a virtual education is considerably less expensive. When the national average of a year’s tuition is over $7,000, saving 40% on that amount adds up to literally tens of thousands of dollars. With many students looking at college loans to finance their future, that’s a significant difference and one that more and more students are choosing.

A more modern consideration is time management. Many of the people taking the e-learning route also hold down everyday jobs and have families. They don’t have the time to go to a campus. With online schools they can take their classes when they come home from the job, eaten and put the kids to bed. They also can take the class in the comfort of a bathrobe on a comfy chair or at the kitchen table.

The third reason the report cited may also be a sign of the times, and that is many of the students interviewed cited their fear of getting the flu from others as a key reason. They are afraid of getting the H1N1 from their fellow classmates. With online education, they are able to stay “safe” from possible contagion. To some, this might sound a bit paranoid, but one could also call this a product of the current environment. There is an abundance of information about online distance learning on the web.

The schools themselves aren’t the only ones studied in the report, the college professors had a thing or two to contribute. To their students, the thing they liked the most was the informal mentoring and training courses the facilities provided. The report also noted a 30% increase in approval amongst all working professors compared to previous studies.

So it appears that online programs ave truly taken hold with students. Time will tell how far this trend will go, but it looks like getting a degree program online is something students are giving a lot of thought about.

Virtually Every Career Path Benefits From Online College! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/virtually-every-career-path-benefits-from-online-college/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/virtually-every-career-path-benefits-from-online-college/#comments Sat, 05 Jun 2010 14:05:09 +0000 Michelle Conner http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/virtually-every-career-path-benefits-from-online-college/ One of the most common dilemmas a teenager faces when graduating high school is just around the corner is what does he or she want to do with the rest of their life. This is particularly troublesome for those who aren’t academically inclined enough to go for a four year program, but don’t want to be stocking shelves for the rest of their lives either. That’s where vocational careers can come in quite handy.

One interesting vocational degree program is massage therapy. Individuals who enjoy interacting with people and who are fairly outgoing will probably be best suited to a massage therapy program. A natural affinity for individuals is key, as massage therapists interact with clients in a particularly intimate fashion in order to help them relieve stress and tension. If you need more information about accredited online universities, look on the internet.

Interestingly, most people think this is the type of profession that can only be taught at a brick-and-mortar school. As it turns out, there are a number of online schools that offer the courses as well. The virtual schools get around things by offering video, audio and perhaps even live interactions over Skype (a web-based platform). True, sooner or later one will have to practice on real people. Then again, try to find a person who won’t enjoy a good back or foot message!

As for income? That can also be quite gratifying. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage is $16.00 an hour. It can go up to $25 and beyond. It’s a field with a future as more and more of the public have become interested in therapy, chiropractic medicine and other alternative forms of non-traditional healing.

In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that careers in this field will grow faster than average over the next 10 years. Those who complete formal training programs or vocational degrees and obtain certification will find a wealth of opportunities. As it happens, nearly 60% of message therapists are free lance, but the rest do work in hospitals, clinics and other health care institutions.

It’s never too late to consider a vocational degree program and if the individual in question has existing qualifications, he or she may find that this additional program is complimentary. For instance, one may hold a degree in psychology, but feel that they want a more physically interactive and demanding career. A vocational degree in massage therapy can satisfy their preference. There is an abundance of information about certificate programs online on the web.

What this all leads to is there are a wide variety of vocations that can be profitable for those who don’t want to go for a full four year educational program or someone who is looking for a creative way to expand beyond what they’ve already learned.

Whatever one’s career goals may be, there are many online schools and on-campus programs that can offer vocational degrees to kick start a career. They also have online college courses that will teach them how to run their own business.

Getting Your Bachelors Degree Online Make Life Less Complicated! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/getting-your-bachelors-degree-online-make-life-less-complicated/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/getting-your-bachelors-degree-online-make-life-less-complicated/#comments Sat, 29 May 2010 15:39:25 +0000 Natasha Bright http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/getting-your-bachelors-degree-online-make-life-less-complicated/ While the unemployment rate has started to drop, it will probably be a long time before it returns to what is considered to be a normal level. This means there is greater competition for fewer jobs, and those with specialized skills may find it is difficult for them to obtain work. In this light, it might be a good idea to consider starting online college classes toward a bachelors degree program, as these qualifications can give individuals the education that may enhance their career prospects.

Many people start down the path to a college degree and get sidetracked. There are a number of reasons people drop out of college; illness, finances or family issues. If the job market is one reason you want to resume your education, it’s not too late. You can get or finish your college degree without totally changing your life. If you need more information about master’s degree online, look on the internet.

Online bachelors degree programs can be ideal for those who want to enhance their qualifications, but have work obligations they cannot avoid. Many schools online offer flexible programs, and students can work at their own pace when and where they choose.

More people are choosing to learn using online college because of the convenience. The curriculum is often the same for online courses as it is for on campus classes. This allows students to opt for either class model and one quarter of all college students are taking at least one class online. Another benefit of online colleges, the courses usually restart every five to eight weeks. With more classes offered during the year, a student can fit more credit hours in than on a semester or trimester schedule.

Online college can put you on your way to your dream job, even if you never thought you had the time to take college courses. Since online courses happen on your schedule, you can learn the skills for a whole new career while you keep your current job or raise your family.

If you are one of the people who started but never finished college, the courses you’ve already taken may not go to waste. Many online degree programs will recognize past college credits. If you can transfer those credits you will save yourself time and tuition. You may find you are closer to having your bachelors degree than you thought. There is an abundance of information about distance learning universities on the web.

Individuals who are starting their first bachelors degree program and who have a family may find that one of the many schools online best suits their lifestyle. Working towards an online bachelors degree means that the student may be able to stay at home with his or her children. In the long term, this decision may save a significant amount of money, because childcare or after-school care will not be necessary.

Accredited online universities are one way to do it. Online courses bend to accommodate the students schedule, making getting online college degree programs possible no matter what home or work life looks like.

Make Sure You Understand All Of The Details About Online College! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/make-sure-you-understand-all-of-the-details-about-online-college/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/make-sure-you-understand-all-of-the-details-about-online-college/#comments Fri, 28 May 2010 11:50:35 +0000 Natasha Bright http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/make-sure-you-understand-all-of-the-details-about-online-college/ Many students enroll in online college degree programs for the convenience. Students these days might choose from online certificate offerings and degree programs provided by two and four year colleges and universities and by vocational schools that train students for specific jobs.

According to career author, publisher and Web site founder and CEO Randall S. Hansen, online college classes might prove especially well-suited to students who learn better through visuals and experiential tasks and those who are introverted, have language barriers or require more time for studies. Working students might be more easily able to participate in studies offered by online schools because they can control the pace, Hansen suggested. It’s also important for students to consider how motivated they are since this, according to an April article in U.S. News & World Report, can be one of the strongest indicators of success with online schools. Students considering online college enrollment should have at least basic technology skills and set time commitments for their studies, the report suggested. If you need more information about online master’s degrees, look on the internet.

The National Center for Education Statistics reminded prospective students that college online or otherwise is a big investment in time and money. Finding the right online college might boost a student’s success in studies and better enable that student to achieve his or her goals. Following are five tips that students considering online schools might want to think about in their search for the right college online:

Their needs and goals: Identify online schools with reputations and online programs best suited to those needs and goals. Guidance counselors, people who’ve participated in specific colleges online and those who work within fields of interest might help. Students can visit campuses and browse the websites for online schools in which they’re interested.

Their communication preferences: College programs online can be offered entirely from a distance or through a combination of online and classroom instruction. Some online classes might be led by instructors who respond more quickly to questions and concerns than others and who offer interactive elements, such as message boards, according to reports. Some online instructors might also deliver coursework through a wider variety of technologies, such as video and audio, reports suggest. Students might consider courses where instructors have been trained to teach online, according to information in the U.S. News & World Report article. Being engaged and involved in studies can be important, the report noted.

Their schedules: While online college classes and online degree and certificate programs might better enable students to incorporate studies into busy schedules, reports cite that some online course formats might be more flexible than others. If childcare or a changing work schedule means no two days in a row are the same, this is something the student should explore. There is an abundance of information about college courses online on the web.

An online school’s credentials: With online schools that are accredited by nationally recognized agencies and programs, students are more likely able to transfer credits and obtain federal financial aid, the U.S. Department of Education suggests. Online schools are often accredited by one of six regional agencies, including the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools; the Northeast Association of Schools and Colleges; the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. These and other Department of Education-recognized accrediting agencies are listed on the department’s website, according to an article from the Eric Clearinghouse on Education. Students can check with institutions to determine which agency has granted accreditation and confirm the information with the Department of Education and the accrediting agency in question, the article reported. The U.S. News & World Report article also suggested that students select departments and programs with specialized accreditation from professional associations such as the American Bar and American Dental associations. And, students can determine whether any complaints have been filed about an online school, the National Center for Education Statistics suggested. They can inquire about complaints by contacting the Better Business Bureau, a state higher education agency, or the state attorney general’s office, according to the center.

Costs: Online college might be cost-effective in that students don’t have to spend money on meal plans, campus housing or commuting to and from campus and students can expect to pay about the same for tuition as they would for classes in a campus setting. Students interested in participating in online school programs might also reduce their share of tuition costs with the help of grants, scholarships, fellowships and work study offerings that schools, government agencies, corporate giants, non-profit organizations and community and civic groups make available. Most employers offering tuition reimbursement in the survey extend the same assistance for online college classes as they do campus-based classes, according to a 2009 Society for Human Resources Management report. Knowing the amount of any assistance as compared to actual tuition costs might better enable students decide on the best investment for them and put some otherwise inaccessible online schools within reach.

Weighing all the factors involved, online college degree programs are the smart choice for so many. This includes the new student to the career employee looking to advance via an online masters programs.

You Can Build A Better Future With An Online College Degree! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/you-can-build-a-better-future-with-an-online-college-degree/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/you-can-build-a-better-future-with-an-online-college-degree/#comments Wed, 26 May 2010 19:11:35 +0000 Natasha Bright http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/you-can-build-a-better-future-with-an-online-college-degree/ A bachelor’s degree can bring with it several advantages, according to an article from the Washington, DC-based ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree might expect to make more money, improve the quality of life for themselves and their children and enjoy greater job security, higher levels of savings and more hobbies and leisure activities, according to the article. The 2002 article noted that a college education might also help students become less authoritarian and more open-minded, cultured, rational and consistent, passing these traits on to future generations.

The economy, through increased tax revenues and consumption and decreased reliance on government financial support, might also benefit when students participate in a college education, according to 1998 Institute for Higher Education Policy information cited in the ERIC article. These days, students working toward a bachelor’s online can enjoy additional advantages as part of their studies. If you need more information about on line master degree, look on the internet.

The benefits of online college classes include affordability, convenience and flexibility, according to career author, publisher and Web site founder and CEO Randall S. Hansen. Students enrolled in a bachelor’s online don’t have to worry about meal plans, housing costs or commuting back and forth to campus and instead can participate in online college classes from wherever they have an Internet connection, Hansen suggested. With no set class times, students can also complete assignments and readings on their own time and in some instances can even design their own degree plans, he reported.

Online college classes also allow students to study from remote locations, to participate in diverse classes with multimedia components and to interact with others through message boards and the like, according to an article in Community College Review. Some have suggested that students who study toward a bachelor’s online can advance their technology skills as well.

Students who learn better through visual offerings and experiential tasks and those who are introverted, face language barriers or require more time for studies might find that online college classes work especially well for them, Hansen suggested. Working students are more easily able to fit online college studies into their schedules because it’s largely up to them to control the “pace” of their studies and their work, according to information he provided.

Online bachelor’s degree offerings have grown substantially over the past several years, allowing students a variety of programs from which to choose. Online college enrollment for fall 2008 alone increased by 17 percent over the previous year, with 4.6 million students taking at least one online college class, according to a Sloan Consortium study.

Students considering pursuing a bachelor’s online must also be realistic. Face time with instructors might be limited to non-existent and, if students procrastinate, they might have a difficult time to making time even for online studies, Hansen suggested. There is an abundance of information about online school on the web.

Reports and studies suggest that some of the most successful online college classes include those where instructors maintain some form of personal contact with students and advise in advance what coursework requires. Students might also look for instructors who respond quickly to their questions and concerns and who offer interaction through message boards and similar technology, according to reports. They might also keep in mind that some online college class formats might be more flexible than others, providing students a greater ability to fit studies into busy schedules.

The flexibility of online degree programs is what is often the most appealing about participating. Economic concerns have people wanting to get the degree they never did, such as an online associates degree, but at the same time has then needing to work.

The Road To Becoming A Registered Nurse Can Be Easier With Online Courses! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/the-road-to-becoming-a-registered-nurse-can-be-easier-with-online-courses/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/the-road-to-becoming-a-registered-nurse-can-be-easier-with-online-courses/#comments Tue, 25 May 2010 10:55:08 +0000 Michelle Conner http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/the-road-to-becoming-a-registered-nurse-can-be-easier-with-online-courses/ What many civilians might not realize is it takes an incredibly long time before becoming a registered nurse. The process starts with four years of college, either on campus or accredited online universities. Then the young grad will spend the next year or two walking the floor of a hospital, clinic or similar health institute, gaining practical experience. Only then can he or she take the National Council Licensure Examination (NYCLEX). Pass it and he or she can officially be called a Registered Nurse.

Many experienced nurses openly admit taking the exam comes with their share of horror stories. The biggest is the dread of not passing. One of nearly every eight actually don’t pass the first time. This doesn’t mean one shouldn’t take the test and be satisfied with their lot. There are some things an RN candidate can do to make it easier on themselves and be part of the 85% that pass the first time. If you need more information about medical degree programs, look on the internet.

Probably the key thing an RN candidate has to overcome is his or her experience, or lack thereof. After all, they have only been on the floor taking care of patients for one to two years. It’s virtually impossible for any RN to have hands-on knowledge of every aspect of her field in that period of time. In fact, most studies have show that at this point a nurse’s knowledge is usually quite strong in the areas he or she’s been working in. The things the nurse in college and hasn’t used usually winds up a hazy memory by this time. The thing is the NYCLEX reviews every aspect of registered nursing, many times asking questions about things the nurse has not had to face. The nurse has to address this problem before signing up to take the exam.

So the first thing to do is sit down with your personnel director or a career counselor and review what you’ve done since gaining your work experience. Review what areas of the institution you’ve worked in and, more importantly, which one’s you haven’t.

Now it’s time to take an online college prep course. Make sure to find out what their success record is before signing up. The higher the success rate, the better the school.

You should not ignore any aspect of the review, but pay special attention to areas you didn’t work in. Most senior nurses report that if they were hung up anywhere in the exam, it was in these areas. Also check to see if the prep course comes with sample questions. Don’t ignore these drills as they are probably the best prep you’ll get from the entire course. Even if they aren’t the questions you’ll face in the exam, they’ll give you an idea of what to expect.

One other practical piece of advice is to consider online colleges for the prep exam. Young nurses are usually the last in line when it the shifts are handed out, and an online course doesn’t care if it’s taken at 3:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m., only that it’s taken. This is where shift work and the dedication it requires can be in your favor. There is an abundance of information about health care college on the web.

Also understand the profession is forgiving. Many RN’s didn’t pass the NYCLEX their first time either. In fact, some claim to say it made them better prepared when they took it again and did become RN’s.

As a prospective nurse candidate, you’ve probably been taking classes through accredited online programs along the way. You may even have obtained your medical assistant degree online.

Creative Scholarships And Grants Await The Imaginative Student! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/creative-scholarships-and-grants-await-the-imaginative-student/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/creative-scholarships-and-grants-await-the-imaginative-student/#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 14:15:42 +0000 Natasha Bright http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/creative-scholarships-and-grants-await-the-imaginative-student/ One of the most popular Sherlock Holmes stories of all time was “The Red-Headed League”. The case revolved around the great detective being hired by a man with an incredibly fiery head of hair being hired by a mysterious man to do absolutely nothing in an empty office. That was fiction. What many prople don’t know, however, is that when it comes to financial aid for an online college course the truth can be stranger.

Believe it or not there are some scholarships out there that make one wonder if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is having a last joke. After all, the bulk of scholarships and grants are based on financial need and/or scholastic excellence. However, while there really are cases of elderly widows who leave their estates to their cats, there really are grants out there for blondes. That’s right, blondes, and that’s one of the more mundane programs. If you need more information about grants for college, look on the internet.

For all you non-believers, there is a web site called Mental Floss. It collects bizarre facts that are both humorous and true. It set up a web page containing a list of ten of these aid packages, and even checked on their authenticity. They even list the administrating body.

The list includes $1,000 for an essay about being tall. This is balanced by another $1,000 for people with dwarfism. Another organization will match the first two with another $1,000 for being left-handed. Yet these three pale compared to the rest of the list.

Mental Floss notes the biggest straight-up handout is a $10,000 scholarship from the Ayn Rand Foundation. It’s for whoever writes for the best annual essay on one of her books each year. If you know anything about the author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, one wonders if this is ultimate rebuttal regarding her belief that all altruism is evil or the ultimate proof of her philosophy of “selfism”. No matter, your literary skills may just get you this scholarship. There is an abundance of information about accredited online universities on the web.

Among the other grants is the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance, the American Nudist Society, and one for twins or parents of twins. Still, the ones that take the cake are a linguistic scholarship for the advancement of the Klingon language (beam that one up Star Trek fans), duck calling and 200 full tuition scholarships for being a golf caddy. The last one makes one wonder if Tiger Woods is a contributor. He can afford it, after all.

Does it surprise you that a number of these monies go unclaimed? It seems that they do. After all, one could say it took an “exceptional” person to think one of these up. It would take an even more exceptional person to file for one of them.

What’s truly strange and wonderful is they will help pay for some person’s higher education, on campus or accredited online universities. Go on Google and search “weird scholarships”. You’ll find hundreds of thousands of listings for student loans and grants and articles on how to get them.

Turn Your Passion Into Profit With A Technology Degree! http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/turn-your-passion-into-profit-with-a-technology-degree/ http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/turn-your-passion-into-profit-with-a-technology-degree/#comments Sat, 22 May 2010 16:48:20 +0000 Natasha Bright http://onlineeducationplace.com/online-education/turn-your-passion-into-profit-with-a-technology-degree/ The gaming industry is starting a new campaign this year. It wants more women in gaming. No, not as players, but as employees. According to site, GamesCareers.biz, the industry has discovered that 10% of all applications received are from women. As industry studies state 38% of all gamers are female, it’s a situation they feel must be rectified immediately. There is more to this field than just development and a degree from accredited online schools will open many doors.

Admittedly, video games suffer from an incredible overdose of testosterone. Go to a convention and predominantly the only females present are convention employees, booth models and bored dates and mothers. To those in the industry, this means they are missing an incredibly huge part of their market. The best solution is to employ more women, both on the development and marketing side, in order to address this situation.

The employment gap is considered so dire that Microsoft held a conference at its headquarters in the state of Washington. CNET pointed out approximately 150 pros attended and the vast majority (90%) of them were women. The cable news service then joked Microsoft managed to reach about all the women in the field. If you need more information about accredited online university, look on the internet.

One can see why many women don’t want to work in gaming. The gaming giants EA and ActiVision are facing lawsuits about their work environment. Although they are paid well in a field other guys would die to be in, developers tend to work long hours with little overtime compensation. This is a situation that isn’t particularly attractive to young women, which studies have profiled as more family- and home-oriented.

One company taking the initiative is Sony Online Entertainment, another leader in the video game field. According to CNN, they have created G.I.R.L., Gamers In Real Life, a scholarship program to attract more young women to careers in game development. It is being led by Torrie Dorrell, Sony’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing.

Gamers In Real Life has already given scholarships of $10,000 each to two deserving women, with plans to announce a third this May. Another perk of the program is the beneficiaries will also be hired as interns at Sony. For those interested in learning more about this program, the Internet will provide additional information. There is an abundance of information about degree on the web.

This isn’t the only program available for ladies who desire to play games as a career. Game development is a part of computer science, and as such is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field. Contacting the National Science Foundation about an S-STEM scholarship/grant should be seriously thought about. After all, even the military uses game simulation as a way to train its young warriors.

As a part of their curriculum, many distance learning degree program offer game development. They even do TV commercials promoting it. Women should contact financial aid officers at these universities for what opportunities are out there. One shouldn’t be surprised if there are many more opportunities once one has obtained a information technology degree.

By that we mean the country’s loss and/or decline of top scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians (often referred to as STEM fields) due to problems with our secondary school systems and competition from overseas. At present, the Bureau of Labor Statistics states there are just short of 6 million filling those occupations, but there is also an extreme need for more. In fact, the need is so acute, previous president George W. Bush and now Barrack Obama have put forth a number of programs to counter this situation, including financial aid, grants and public policy positions. Changing from your current occupation to one of these fields can be accomplished with online college classes as you work.

It’s been keeping online colleges bounding ahead, not only aiding young students to obtain their first Bachelor’s of Science degree, but for seasoned professionals who need to move on to their Masters and Ph.Ds, and just attending online seminars to keep up to date. STEM is a field of perpetual study. It’s also so broad it can use more definition. The best way to start is defining the main categories, i.e. science, engineering, math and tech. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), they are:

(1) Natural Science Occupations – These scientists and technicians fall broadly into three key subsets: Life scientists, physical scientists and natural scientist technicians. They compose approximately 13% (752,000) of all STEM personnel. Specialists include agricultural and food scientists, biological scientists, conservation, environmentalists and geophysicists, astronomers and medical scientists. The technicians assist scientists in conducting experiments and analyzing the results. If you need more information about distance learning universities, look on the internet.

(2) Engineering – The second largest group at 2.2 million (approximately 37% of the STEM personnel). Almost everything on the market today is due to some engineer taking a scientist’s idea and finding a practical way to use it. The number of specialties is as broad as the number of people in the field. They include agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil (the largest category), electrical/electronics and mechanical engineers among others. There are also drafters and technicians, who assist the engineers in designing and then testing the products they help produce.

(3) Technology: The largest group with nearly fifty percent (2.9 million) is this field, reserved to computer and information technology. This category use logic, mathematics and science to make computers function. Some workers create new software, design computer systems, and develop databases. Others focus on helping people use computers and on keeping computers running well. The field encompasses design and development of the machines.

(4) Mathematicians – The smallest of the groups at barely 57,000 (less than 1%), they focus on mathematics almost exclusively. Mathematicians include actuaries, pure mathematicians, operations research analysts and statisticians. Practical mathematicians work on anything from figuring out your insurance premium to setting odds for casinos. There is an abundance of information about online college degree programs on the web.

According to the BLS, STEM workers earned about 70 percent more than the national average. This is due to an extremely strong demand for workers. Side perks, such as insurance, investment and retirement packages, not forgetting continued educational subsidies, can be considerable. Depending on the specialty, growth is expected to range anywhere from 10% to 31%. It’s truly a field with an incredible future.

Accredited online universities mean those who are working, who have families, who have responsibilities that cannot be interrupted can still attend college with distance learning education and get their science bachelor degree.
