BusinessWeek reveals that the new plan – part of the health care bill – will save a total of $68 billion over a 10-year period. With this current economy, making ends meet is getting pretty tough. It can be even tougher while participating in degree programs online. Even if you hold down a regular job and go to school, that won’t stop the landlord wanting the rent. And even if the federal government does offer the maximum for a Pell Grant ($5,750), it’s often not enough. This is one of the leading reasons why most students drop out in their first two years.

Don’t think the government isn’t aware. As it happens, the Board of Education has developed a supplemental grant for those with extreme needs. One of these programs was launched in 2006. The Academic Competitive Grant (ACG) can provide a freshman up to $750 in addition to the Pell. A sophomore can get even more, up to $1,300. This grant does come with some provisos. For starters, a candidate must fill out a FASFA form and apply for the Pell. From there, the Board of Education decides if the applicant is entitled to the ACG. If so, it will send out an additional questionnaire that must be filled out.

Getting the grant doesn’t happen overnight either. One must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and take a minimum of a half-semester’s worth of courses. While the money is supplemental to the Pell Grant, the total sum granted by both can’t exceed the cost of going to the university of choice. These monies are to be used for educational purposes.

A candidate must also have attended a recognized secondary school program. The rules have been modified in 2009 to allow for home schooling, but there are two provisos there. The first is, whatever the program, it has to be recognized by the state the student lives in. Also, the program of high school study must meet a federal standard for “rigorousness”, i.e., certain academic basics had to have been taught and met.

A student must also be planning to further his or her education in a predetermined group of curricula. The number of possible degrees a student can go for is pretty broad, and includes just about every form of science, tech, engineering, math, teaching and a number of liberal arts. Make College More Affordable With Grants From The Government!

Every student thinking of going to college has heard of the Pell Grant. It cuts the cost considerably for those who are pursuing traditional and online degrees. At the same time, even though President Obama pushed through a raise on the Pell, it’s currently only good for less than $6,000 at max, and that might not cover the entire cost of tuition, much less living expenses.

What many students don’t know is there’s another federal program, one that’s been around longer than even the Pell. Entitled the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, or the SEOG, it was introduced back in 1966. It can give a student as much as an additional $4,000 towards tuition and fees. In fact, this year the U.S. will give out over $700 million through the SEOG, making it the second largest grant program in the country. To apply for the SEOG, one must fill out the FASFA form just like the Pell. The same document can be used for both programs. As is probably known, the FASFA will ask about such things as both the student’s and the parent’s financial status, their expenses, and such things as what their education will probably cost. This is especially relevant to the SEOG, as it considers outside grants, and by that we aren’t just talking the Pell, but from elsewhere.

There are other important qualifications for the SEOG. First, the student must be a born or naturalized American citizen. Next, even if one gets the Pell Grant there must still be a negative difference between everything else one gets and the school’s cost. It should also be noted the SEOG is only for Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees, not vocational programs or post-grad. The student must also have and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or better before and during their academic career.

If the student somehow manages to be overpaid by the Pell, then he/she automatically loses the SEOG. On the other hand, if a student drops out for a time, he can still get SEOG money if deciding to go back. Another way to lose the SEOG is, after dropping out, the student winds up in default of any college loans they may have had.

If the Board of Education determines the student is eligible there are still some hoops one must jump through. The check doesn’t go directly to the applicant. Instead, the school sets up a bank/credit account in the student’s name. From there, whenever a term begins, the Board of Education issues a check to the student via the college. The student then signs over the check, which is deposited to the account as payment for the tuition. This assures the monies go for the education for which they are earmarked. If any of this seems a bit confusing, it’s a good idea to consult a college financial officer. It’s their job to help a student (and family) through the process, including navigating the paperwork, filing and getting the hopeful acceptance letter.
