For 200 years, America has been undergoing several political changes and phases that have affected all its aspects. During these critical years, a lot of books also undergone different kind of banning in some community libraries because of the rather bad influence that they were having among children. However, when you look closely at these books, you may wonder why they were banned at all! Read the list of the 3 banned books in the US places and the reasons why they were not allowed for public viewing.
1. “A Wrinkle in Time” (Madeleine L’Engle). A book of fantasy and make-believe that once read, no one would want to neither leave nor escape from. (Familiar? J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts) The plot centered on a girl’s endless search for her missing father. It was specifically banned because of its promotion of witchcraft, hocus-pocus, and crystal balls. The fact the it dragged the name of Jesus Christ alongside some great artists, scientists, religious artists, and even philosophers, gave the more reason for its being banned.
2. “A Light in the Attic” by Shel Silverstein. This book is a lighthearted poetry for children. So, why was it banned? Inappropriate content is the answer here. It was even challenged by one school at Florida since the book somewhat promotes “horror, disrespect, violence.” In fact, according to some, most of the poems of the book somewhat encouraged disobedience and even messiness; according to most of the parents who wanted its banning.
3. “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn”. Another Mark Twain masterpiece, this book was regarded as one of the most sensation books ever written by one of the most known authors, too. It was banned due to its “pernicious” influence on the young minds. The use of word beginning with “n” has also been one major reason why it was pulled out of the reading list of the eight-grade students.
If you knew these books and had loved them, wondering why they were banned is the feeling we both shared, then.
