Investment Rules for 529 College Savings Plans: IRS Eases Rules
Posted by Doeren Mayhew in Education on July 4th, 2009
Saving for college is always tough and is even more so during the current economic downturn. One of the most popular educational savings plans are so called “529 plans.” The IRS has announced that participants in 529 plans will now be able to change their investments more often in 2009 than in past years. The IRS will now allow a change in investment strategy twice in 2009. This is good news for 529 plan participants, especially those who may otherwise be locked into an investment mix that has turned out to be more speculative than initially contemplated.
Tax-Free Distribution A 529 plan is qualified tuition program. By contributing to a 529 plan, taxpayers contribute to an account established for paying a student’s educational expenses. Eligible educational expenses may include the costs of tuition, books, and fees at eligible institutions, such as colleges, vocational schools, and other ostsecondary institutions.
Contributions to 529 plans are not tax-deductible, however, although earnings are tax-free, and distributions used to pay the beneficiary’s qualified education xpenses are tax-free.
A 529 plan should not be mistaken with a Coverdell Educational Savings Account (Coverdell ESA). The latter is also a savings account for education expenses that offers tax-free distributions, but funds saved in a Coverdell ESA can be used for elementary and secondary school expenses as well as college costs.
Investment Decision For the most part, participants in 529 plans must select only from among broadbased investment strategies designed exclusively by the program. The IRS has also traditionally permitted a change in investment strategy only once a year.
In response to the economic slowdown and the turmoil in the financial markets, the IRS will allow investments in a 529 plan to be changed during 2009 on a more regular basis. A 529 plan will not violate the investment restriction if it permits a change in the investment strategy more than once in calendar year 2009, as well as upon a change in the designated beneficiary of the account.
Importance of Professional Expert Witnesses Credentials
Many of us are familiar courtroom dramas and films which, by and large, have create a throng of armchair forensic specialists. In the real world however, where the consequences of courtroom outcomes could literally mean life or death for an individual, it pays to have credible experts take the stand to lend their opinions.
It can therefore not be understated that expert witnesses play a significant role in modern day courtroom justice. Although eye witness testimony is still significant, it too can be overruled when pertinent, indisputable facts emerge due to the testimony of professional expert witnesses.
This means that the credentials of an expert witness, like a doctor, CSI expert or scientist are beyond important in the legal forums.
Why Expert Witness Credentials Matter There are many reasons why one should take an expert witnesses background into account. For example, amateur or novice specialists will not have as much hands-on time in the field as a seasoned veteran. Although the greenhorn will possess some knowledge, there are certain things that can only be learned through time spent out in the field.
Other reasons why proffessional expert witness should have impeccable credentials include, but are not limited to:
- The ability to place evidence in perspective. Family members and defendants will be emotional during a trial. Some will have much at stake in regards to the outcome of the case. Expert witnesses with the proper certifications can take the emotional element out of the proceedings and present evidence in a clinical way. The more impressive the background of the expert, the more likely they will sway the opinions of decision makers who can make or break your case.
- They can set the bar for future court cases. Forensic pioneers and those who have devised ingenious new ways to test evidence, or paved the way for medical science to make the job of determining pertinent facts easier on lawmakers and jurors can affect the judicial process as a whole. DNA evidence is a case in point. Since its advent it has been used to secure convictions and release the innocent. Professionals in this realm can thereby help educate a jury and aid them in making informed, reasonable decisions.
- Expert witnesses are more prepared. Someone who is unfamiliar with the courtroom process or with the subject matter at hand will not appear confident or capable, two things that will sell their version of events to people who are trying to ascertain the facts. Experienced specialists will know how to present their arguments in a way that doesn’t alienate the jurors as well.
These considerations are extremely important when trying to select professional expert witnesses who can potentially strengthen your case.
Defining the Reliability of an Expert Witness An expert witness should, by their education, reputation and skill level, be able to lend a qualifying voice to courtroom proceedings that helps juror make informed decisions. They should also deliver their opinions in a concise way that won’t lose the interest of those who are trying to make sense of the information provided.
This makes the role of the expert witness invaluable, which is why, when it comes to your court case, the credentials of the expert witnesses should be the first thing you look at before selecting someone to represent you or a client in court.
ESL - Improving your Listening Comprehension in English
Posted by Shawn Everett in Education on July 3rd, 2009
Whether you live in an English speaking country or not you can become an active listener of the English language. Practice makes perfect and there is no better way to practice listening skills than in a classroom program. Teachers of English understand the confusing terms and can explain and introduce content and grammar in context of real world examples making it more useful, more realistic, and more clear. Taking advantage of the many resource available to you is a great start to improving your listening comprehension skills.
If you live in an English-speaking country you have an amazing opportunity to interact with native speakers - but you must take the initiative. If you are a student you should try to live in a dormitory where you will be mixed in with native-speakers, or request a homestay with an English-speakingfamily. See if your school can help you find a “language partner” who wants to practice your language, and set up an exchange where you practice both languages together.
It is important to take the initiative to speak to native speakers of English everyday. Many non-native speakers hesitate to initiate authentic conversations. It is important that you do not limit your interactions with people to only include those who speak the same language as you. By creating reasons to initiate conversations it will force you to practice and apply the English you are learning. Each day set one goal of starting a conversation, whether you make a phone call to find out about a flight, ask a waiter for the ingredients of your meal, stop into local businesses to ask questions or directions, each opportunity to practice is ging to improve your English.
Additional strategies for improving you English are many. Think of some interview questions as an assignment for your English class and ask people on the street as you walk in a familiar area. When native speakers are talking concentrate on what they are saying and think to yourself if you understand it.If you find you are confused ask them to speak more slowly and try repeating the information back to see if you understood it clearly. Always ask more questions not only to gain knowledge but to also engage the speaker in more conversation. Joining a club, sports team, or volunteering are all excellent ways to surround yourself with native speakers. Even television can help you in your English skills. Try out close captioning if you TV has this option. It will show you the written text along with you hearing it spoken aloud. Perfect combination!
In countries where English is not the native language it can be more challenging to find opportunities to practice. In large cities you will have a better chance of locating native English speakers with whom you can practice. Research your area to see if there is an American library where you can check out books on tape, reading as you listen. Be very careful using the books on tape as often in English words are spoken differently than they are written and often words are shortened or lengthened to change the meaning slightly. The bonus is that you can rewind the tape to listen again and again.
We are lucky to have technology at our fingertips no matter where you live. A great resource is satellite television which allows you to view television programs that are broadcast around the world such as CNN International or the BBC which are English language stations covering world news. Even without satellite television the English programming is right here on your computer if you have internet access. Interested in international affairs, you can access President Obama’s speeches. Love to cook? Watch any number of cooking shows right from your computer. Find yourself a pen-pal in an English speaking country to write and speak to using Skype and videoconferences. Just practice speaking and listening and have fun!

For People Considering Working At Hess In Taiwan
Posted by Cami Adair in Education on July 3rd, 2009
Due to an unfortunate series of events which caused a major lack of funds, I ended up signing on to work at Hess language schools in Taiwan.
During Training in Taipei(which was informative but annoying) I found out that I was not going to get the contract I wanted (contract C, two kindergarten classes) and that instead I would be working split shifts, beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 8:30 pm, and teaching classes I did not want to teach.
I refused to sign the contract but said I would try out the new schedule anyway. At the end of training I got another surprise which was that Hess had made no arrangements to transport my surfboard with me to my new home even though they had repeatedly promised that they would do it. When I became suspicious and asked about it they told me to stop worrying - if they would have just told me the truth (that they weren’t planning to transport it) then I could have made my own arrangements.
Arriving at the branch I discovered that the job which paid ‘hourly’ required you to work way above and beyond your paid hours- and that my two co-workers were working 12-14 hour days and only getting paid for 6 of those hours. I refused to work so many extra hours but soon found that the only people who suffered when I didn’t do the extra work were my underpaid co-teachers and the children- so I ended up working hundreds of unpaid hours for Hess.
After 10 months of increasingly ridiculous work situations, I finally left Hess (but not until after they threatened to take 20,000nt from me, told me I’d have to leave the country, neither of which happened). And now I am much happier- the end. Oh and by the way there are of course good things about Hess- it’s just a pretty raw deal for the teachers. I write more about the positive things at Hess in my long version.
If you want details, keep reading. I do get pretty long-winded though- I figure this is cheaper than therapy =) For the sake of reading ease, this blog is kind of written backward- meaning the beginning posts are at the top, and if you want to continue reading, you have to click on ‘older posts’. Everyone Has The Power To Become A Clairvoyant
Posted by Simon Pegg in Education on July 3rd, 2009
Clairvoyance is considered to be a paranormal term that originated in the French language. In the French language the word ‘clair’ means ‘clear’ and ‘voyance’ translates to ‘vision’, so a ‘voyant’ would be known as a visionary. Therefore, ‘clairvoyance’ translates to ‘clear vision’ and a ‘clairvoyant’ would be known as an individual that is a ‘clear visionary.’ However, the literal translations are neither very helpful nor accurate.
Further complicating the definition is that the term ‘clairvoyant’ has been used to refer to different things over the years. ‘Clairvoyant’ gradually emerged as a term applying to someone who displayed a range of paranormal, or psychic, abilities. The only all-encompassing definition that really fits is that a clairvoyant is someone with the ability to know things about a location, object, person, or event by means others than the five physical senses. In other words, clairvoyance refers to a form of extra-sensory perception (ESP).
Clairvoyance usually involves a clairvoyant person knowing about something that is happening right then, but far away or otherwise out of range of their physical senses. However, there have also been documented cases of a clairvoyant knowing of something that happened in either the past or the future. Because of this, clairvoyance is considered by some to be a form of precognition, or prophecy.
The means through which a clairvoyant learns hidden information varies, but generally breaks down into one of six categories. Clairvoyance is perhaps most associated with the first form, the phenomenon of ‘remote viewing.’ In remote viewing, a clairvoyant sees a person, object, location, or event hidden from them. This sometimes takes the form of a visual hallucination, and other times as the clairvoyant ’seeing’ something in their ‘mind’s eye.’
The next form of clairvoyance is called clairaudience. With clairaudience, the clairvoyant is able to gain the information about a remote event through sound. They are able to hear noises and voices that others and recording equipment are unable to. In cases where a clairvoyant hears the voices of the dead, this phenomenon crosses the line and enters into the mediumship.
The third type of clairvoyance is clairsentience. In clairsentience, the person gains knowledge though touch and feeling. In some cases this may take the form of feeling actual object that are not there. In other cases, it is more a feeling or ‘vibe’ that the clairvoyant feels from particular remote people, locations, or events.
The fourth one is clairalience. This happens when a person is able to gain knowledge of remote events and locations with their sense of smell. It is possible for them to smell wildflowers or grass of a beautiful spring meadow that is followed by the smell of gunpowder that is followed with the scent of blood. No one else is able to smell these things and there is never an apparent source for the smells.
The fifth type of clairvoyance is clairgustance. In clairgustance, a person with an empty mouth can taste various flavors, despite there being no apparent source. They can also describe the taste of things from a distance.
The sixth and final form of clairvoyance is claircognizance. This is perhaps the most hard to define or explain. In claircognizance, a person knows something about a remote person, object, location, or event, but can’t explain how they gained that knowledge?they just know it. To some extent, claircognizance is a catch-all category of clairvoyance.
There have been many documented occurrences of people who are clairvoyant throughout history from different cultures around the globe. Instances of clairvoyance have also been incorporated into some of the world’s most widespread religions.
In Buddhism for example, clairvoyance is considered of the six special senses humans are capable of at advanced levels of meditation. In this case, it refers to being able to feel vibrations put out by other people.
In the Catholic religion, clairvoyance often been considered to be miraculous. Saint Francis had a disciple, Saint Claire that had a vision of his death even though she was miles away. This case took place over 500 hundred years ago. As a result, the Catholic Church made her the patron saint of ‘television’ which means ’seeing over a distance.’
There are, of course, many who are sceptical of clairvoyance. It is part of human nature for people to deny the existence of something just because they do not understand it. For example, even the existence of magnetism and electricity was denied by ’scientists’ not that long ago historically.
No matter what the skeptics are saying, nobody has ever been able to completely disprove that clairvoyance is possible. In fact, there is plenty of evidence that shows that there are many genuine clairvoyants among us. In general, parapsychologists, scientists, and the public is starting to become more open minded and seem more ready to accept the fact that clairvoyance is very real.
Even though we don’t know how this all works, there is absolutely no reason to ignore that the phenomenon exists. There are some people that think all humans had the ability to be clairvoyant in the distant past, but somehow lost their abilities. These same people think that is possible for people regain these talents if they were to make some effort to develop the powers.
Understanding Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Posted by Gordon Dalwood in Education on July 3rd, 2009
The fictitious beliefs surrounding GAD or generalized anxiety disorder are many. Some say it is not an illness of great import and the people that have this are just suffering from a weak mind. This is just a stereotype that has become commonplace and the accuracy of this diagnosis is totally off-track. Millions of people who have GAD are suffering from a genuine incapacitating condition that is not a figment of their imagination.
Essentially, GAD is a form of anxiety which manifests itself primarily as worry and nervousness, and in most cases it is known to be chronic. Sufferers experience frequent bouts of nervousness, fear and even paranoia with regards to various aspects of their lives, whether it’s about personal matters, their career, their family or of course, their financial position. However, it’s only when a person experiences these symptoms for at least six months that they are then considered to be suffering from GAD.
Many symptoms are indicative of those suffering from GAD. They may be symptoms such as chronic insomnia, drowsiness, forgetfulness, lack of energy as well as irritability. The physical aspects start to take over once the anxiety becomes more than the mind can handle. This is what causes the GAD sufferer to lose the ability to focus on common activities.
There are instances of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder among those who have GAD. Events that may have been traumatic can result in flashbacks. This will interfere with the quality of life the person had prior to experiencing these symptoms of GAD and their way of life loses the value when compared to those who do not suffer from GAD. Thus, the importance of seeking treatment for GAD.
The first step in treatment centers on receiving a proper analysis. Such an analysis is administered by a psychiatrist through a series of standardized tests. Once the psychiatrist arrives at the proper diagnosis, he/she will take the next treatment steps. This will usually involve being prescribed anti-anxiety medications intended to curtail the problem.
This method helps many people to rid themselves of the GAD symptoms. However, there are those who will prefer going the therapist route and receive counseling to combat the symptoms of GAD. There is also the combination of therapy and medication which seems to work great for many people.
Furthermore, it’s extremely important not to dismiss making a few simple lifestyle changes to further reduce anxiety. Taking part sports, changing one’s diet, having hobbies that reduce tension can all have a calming and therapeutic.
Those who think GAD is not a serious condition should be dismissed. The opinions of these people are not based on any professional knowledge and are not going to help. The condition is not going to go away by ignoring it and listening to well meaning advice is not advised. This is a myth and has no value as a cure. Seek help from those who know what they are doing.
Explaining the Education Path to Obtain Pharmacist Jobs
The Pharmaceutical industry is growing in leaps and bounds. Most people can say that theyve viewed a commercial about a new drug thats been developed or spent time talking with a pharmacy tech at their local drug store. With earnings averaging in the mid to high $100K annual range, and an above average growth rate expected for careers, there are many opportunities to work in this field if this interests you. Heres how you can find the right education path you need to obtain pharmacist jobs.
A pharmacist job generally requires a good deal of education, starting with a Bachelors degree in Science from an accredited college or university. In 1992, a majority of the nations schools voted to create a Doctorate program in pharmaceutical studies, so that is generally the standard that professional pharmacists adhere to in their educational pursuits. So, on average, Pharmacists must get the same number of years of education as a Physician or Lawyer before they can take a state board exam and become a professional working pharmacist. Thats a total of six years of post-secondary education.
In general, the education that pharmacists must have consists of studies in Pharmacology (the study of drugs), Chemistry, Clinical Care and Administration. In addition, pharmacists must have a solid background in mathematics and general biological science. Excellent writing and communications skills are vital to success in pharmacy as are knowledge of literature, history, government and social studies. Pharmacy is unique in that it combines the people aspect of care to the field of science, so being able to manage people and their needs is an important skill for any pharmacist to have.
In addition to the regular college classes they take, many pharmacists choose to work in either a pharmacy technician program as part of their learning process. There are multiple opportunities for pharmacy students to get all or part of their educational expenses paid for while they are in school if they become employed by a major pharmaceutical company or retailer. There is a big need for skilled pharmacists so companies are often ready to help with the costs of education to recruit them after graduation.
Once all college or university courses have been completed, the next step in the process is to take a state licensing exam. This is similar to a doctor or legal professional taking their state board exams. At the successful completion of the testing process, the pharmacy student or technician may begin working as a professional pharmacist. Each year, pharmacists are required to retrain or get additional coursework to keep their licenses and knowledgebase up to date.
Becoming a pharmacist is a rewarding career choice for individuals who enjoy helping others manage their medical care via drugs and medicine treatments. This allows them to work with patient care, but stay out of the clinical setting. By following the above tips, you can be well on your way to getting an education in pharmacy too.

Guitar Instructional DVD: Have Fun While Practicing
Posted by Shayne Fletcher in Education on July 3rd, 2009
Knowing the fact that the approach you use to learn the guitar is the key-determining factor in your success or failure to actually learn, these three conclusions follow:
Despite the fact that many successful don’t really talk much about this, you can find some that do. Believe me, becoming successful is a lot more than just practicing and luck! REMEMBER that their strategies won’t necessarily work for you because your goals may be different than theirs were. Still you can learn from it.
But no matter how good you get, there will always be something you can learn from someone else. Seek out those people, get to know them, jam with them, discuss music and guitar with them. Be willing to give as much (or more) as you want to take. If you are fortunate enough to be above the level of other guitarists in your area, seek out great bassists, pianists, violinists, drummers, etc. You can learn from them as well. (Even if you are not better than your guitar player friends, seek out musicians that play other instruments as well anyway).
Create a strategy! You need a strategy that will layout exactly how you are going to reach your goals. Dreaming alone won’t take you anywhere. Telling yourself that you are going to play your guitar everyday isn’t enough. There is a lot more that goes into being an excellent player than simply playing your guitar.
Ultimately you should work backwards. State your ultimate goals (on paper) then make a bunch of short and medium range goals. Think of reaching your goals as a relay race, NOT as a marathon. Each short term and medium term goal is the end of one segment of your plan and the beginning of the next segment (just like a relay race.) There are many benefits of looking at things this way as you will discover for yourself in your own way.
I notice the finger responsible for playing that note is the third finger. It is not getting to the note because it is going up in the air in reaction to the second finger being used right before it in that particular scale passage. In other words, it is tensing in reaction to the movement of it’s neighboring finger, and I have not been paying attention to it. I realize this is a bad habit that pervades my playing, a third finger that tenses up in reaction to the use of the second finger.
I believe “Self Expression” is the pinnacle of all art. Anything less, “is less” in my opinion. I’m not going to debate that view or try to persuade any of you to also believe it. Instead I am going to assume you already hold that view and discuss ways in which I may be able to offer you both philosophical and practical advice.
Think about the masters of music. Mozart was probably most naturally gifted in only three of the musical areas: technical skill, a great ear (perfect pitch), a great musical memory. But he had to work hard at all the other areas of music just like everybody else.
